Supporting Hoosier Veterans

Supporting Hoosier Veterans

Monday, November 6, 2023

As a nation, we must never forget the sacrifices made by all active-duty military personnel and veterans who served in the armed forces.

Though we could never adequately convey our gratitude, the Indiana General Assembly has a strong record of supporting Hoosier veterans and their families.

Earlier this year, lawmakers unanimously passed House Enrolled Act 1034, which eliminates the state income tax for income earned from active or reserve military service starting in 2024. This new law will put more money back in the pockets of these service members so they can better support their families.

Throughout Indiana, there are many resources available for active-duty personnel and veterans.

All 92 counties have Veterans Service Officers who can connect local veterans to the benefits they earned through their service.

Honorably discharged veterans who enroll at an Indiana public college within one year of their discharge are also eligible for in-state tuition.

For military families in need of assistance, the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs' (DVA) Military Family Relief Fund (MFRF)offers resources available to help veterans pay housing expenses, utilities, food, medical expenses and transportation costs. With the holiday season approaching, the DVA opened applications for its Operation Holiday Program, through the MFRF. This program offers $200 for holiday meals and $300 per dependent child to families who qualify.

In recent years, Indiana has also invested in veterans' problem-solving courts throughout the state. These courts have been set up because many veterans have specific needs and problems traditional courts are unable to address. These courts are designed to provide positive outcomes for victims, society and reduce the recidivism rate among veterans.

With Veterans Day this week, veterans organizations around Indiana like the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will be hosting ceremonies throughout the state.
