A New School Grading System for Indiana

By State Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond)

Several weeks ago, I talked about the importance of having a transparent school grading system in Indiana that reflects both on standardized tests and the number of students who graduated with diploma seals. I highlighted a law I sponsored this year that directs the Indiana Department of Education to update their school grading system and how it will allow parents to best compare Indiana school performance.

Now, IDOE has unveiled their first draft of the new school grading system I supported this session.

This new system would retool the A through F grades with a points system based on things like work-based learning attendance, academic ability and communication skills. Students will receive points based on how they have progressed in these different characteristics. Then, each student’s score is averaged together to provide the grade for the school itself.

I support this new system because it not only tells parents how a school is doing academically but also shows how well students are prepared for their college and careers. With schools creating more programs to help students find success once they graduate, it is of the utmost importance that school grades reflect their ability to succeed.

IDOE has collaborated with educators, students, parents and community leaders to create a system that best fits our state's needs. While this is just the start and there will be more drafts to come, I believe this is a step in the right direction for students, parents and the state.
