Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Nominate a Hoosier agriculture leader

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

Since our state's founding more than 200 years ago, agriculture has been one of Indiana's top industries.

As of 2023, Indiana was the seventh largest agricultural exporter in the nation, exporting more than $6.3 billion in products. Agriculture also contributes more than $35 billion to our state's economy each year.

As a fifth-generation Hoosier farmer, I know firsthand the hard work and dedication it takes to keep a farm going. While some years are great for farmers, there are other years where it can be a struggle to make ends meet.

That's why I enjoy finding ways to honor local farmers for all the work they do, which is why I’m highlighting the Indiana State Department of Agriculture's AgriVision Award.

The AgriVision Award was established in 2007 as a way to recognize Hoosier farmers and those who work in agriculture for their significant contributions to the industry.

For nearly 20 years, this award has allowed Indiana to recognize those outstanding individuals who help our agricultural industry to grow and thrive, and I encourage you to consider nominating someone you believe deserves this honor.

To nominate a Hoosier farmer, or someone who works in the agricultural industry, visit https://tinyurl.com/AgriVision.

The nomination period for this year's award is open now through July 1. This year's winner will be honored during the 2025 Indiana State Fair in August.

As always, constituents can reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email at s48@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
