Senate Republicans Pass Agenda

Senate Republicans Pass Agenda

Wednesday, March 21, 2018

In January, Senate Republicans set out five main goals for the legislative session including fighting the drug epidemic, streamlining workforce development efforts, supporting Hoosier schools, reforming civil forfeiture laws and legalizing Sunday alcohol sales. Each of these bills are positive improvements that will continue to move Indiana forward.

The Senate Republicans’ 2018 legislative agenda included the following items.

  • Fight the drug epidemic
Help prevent opioid abuse by phasing in a requirement for doctors to check INSPECT, the state’s prescription-monitoring service, when prescribing opioids to a patient.

  • Improve workforce development
Expand financial aid for job-training programs and create a workforce cabinet responsible for streamlining workforce development efforts, and require high schools to offer computer science.

  • Support our schools
Increase school funding to account for higher-than-expected enrollment in our public schools and adjust Indiana’s diploma system to ensure all high-school graduates are provided with a better, more effective pathway into college or the workforce.

  • Reform civil forfeiture laws
Reform Indiana’s civil forfeiture laws to create a better balance between law-enforcement needs and property owners’ Constitutional rights.

  • Allow Sunday alcohol sales
Act on the recommendation of the Alcohol Code Revision Commission to allow the carryout sale of alcohol on Sundays in Indiana.
