Being a good citizen is vital for our local communities. It is what brings people together and creates a well-functioning society, which is what we need.
It is important to teach students about being good members of our community in school and provide them opportunities to join organizations and learn about career options. Teaching students about these opportunities in schools gives them a chance to explore those options for themselves and ask questions they may have. This also allows them to talk with their peers to find others who are interested in the same thing.
With all of this in mind, I introduced Senate Bill 200, which would require schools to allow organizations like Scouts or military recruiters to talk to students twice a year.
This bill would increase the chance that students are involved in reputable organizations that hold high standards and decrease the chance of being caught up in nefarious activities.
SB 200 passed out of the Senate and is now headed to the House of Representatives for their consideration. I will continue to ensure our students have every opportunity available to them to be positively influenced by civic organizations.
