Walker: Senate marks the halfway point of session

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 30, 2026) — The Indiana Senate recently completed the first half of the 2026 legislative session, said State Sen. Greg Walker (R-Columbus).

In total, 290 bills were introduced in the Senate in the first half of session, and of those, 112 were passed.

Upon final passage in the Senate, 90% of bills received bipartisan support and 46% received unanimous support.

During the first half of session, Walker authored legislation that would raise the amount of weekly income protected from wage garnishment to $600 and raise the amount of intangible property protected in bankruptcy proceedings from $300 to $1,500. This bill would protect low-income Hoosiers from unreasonable debt collection and help more to settle their debts while remaining financially stable.

"As we reflect on the first half of session, the Senate has done a lot of work to promote public safety, cut taxes for working Hoosiers and prevent fraud in government programs," Walker said. "However, there is still a lot of work to be done and many more conversations that need to happen. I am happy that my language is moving to the House to address the garnishment issue, and I hope it will help low-income Hoosiers get into better financial standing over time."
