Protecting Hoosiers from foreign threats

Protecting Hoosiers from foreign threats

Thursday, March 30, 2023

This year, Senate Republicans are spearheading efforts to ensure Hoosier land and money is safe from foreign threats.

Defending Hoosier Land

Nations such as China or Russia often use their own wealthy, private citizens to purchase American land on behalf of the government – threatening our critical infrastructure and moving adversarial states into Hoosiers' backyards.

Senate Bill 477 would prohibit the selling of public or privately owned land located near communication networks, supply chain hubs or government facilities to entities deemed a national threat.

Strengthening Local Military Facilities

Indiana has important military bases and facilities within our borders, including the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division, Lake Glendora Test Facility and Grissom Air Reserve Base.

Senate Bill 332 would better protect Hoosiers by establishing new zoning districts for areas around these bases and requiring real estate disclosures to notify what properties are within three miles of the bases.

Protecting Hoosier Investments

The State of Indiana has over $1 billion invested in Chinese Communist Party interests.

Senate Bill 268 would create a five-year divestment plan from these interests and prohibit the Indiana Public Retirement System (INPRS) from investing in companies controlled by the People's Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party.

INPRS manages the pension funds for Indiana's state employees, teachers, state law enforcement officers, public officials and others. SB 268 would ensure Hoosiers' hard-earned pension money is invested locally, instead of as an endorsement of human rights violations.

Senate Republicans understand that any involvement with adversarial states poses a serious risk to our infrastructure and Hoosiers' safety. Preventing foreign threats now before it is too late will keep Indiana a safe place to live, work and raise a family.
