March is Disability Awareness Month

Thursday, March 24, 2022

In February 1987, President Ronald Reagan officially declared March as National Disabilities Awareness Month. The proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities that help individuals with disabilities lead productive and fulfilling lives.

The national theme this year is "Worlds Imagined." This serves to highlight how our world is changing as we move beyond the pandemic, examine intellectual and developmental disabilities and recognize how people with disabilities are living longer and more productive lives.

Gov. Eric Holcomb designated March 2022 as Disability Awareness Month in Indiana to celebrate and recognize people with disabilities and come together to promote equity and inclusion.

Adults and children with disabilities make up nearly a fifth of Indiana's population, and represent more than 54 million Americans. This is why it is important we strive to work toward a community that includes equal opportunities and life experiences for all people.
