#INtheKnow: Funding Indiana’s Roads for the Future

Monday, June 26, 2017

During the 2017 legislative session, lawmakers established a long-term, sustainable plan to fund Indiana’s transportation infrastructure.

House Enrolled Act 1002 will improve, maintain and complete critical road projects across the state for the next 20 years. When this plan is fully phased in, HEA 1002 will provide $1.2 billion per year for our state and local roads.

The plan is based on a user-fee philosophy, dedicating all of the taxes paid at the pump to road funding. By using this approach, the average Hoosier driver will only pay an additional $5 to $6 per month. Those who drive the most will pay the most, but they will also get the most benefit.

HEA 1002 will help relieve traffic congestion, increase highway safety, and reduce the nearly $500 per year the average driver spends on vehicle repairs.

This law goes into effect July 1.
