One of my top priorities as a state senator is ensuring Hoosier children are safe – especially when they're at school.
With many students across the state returning to class, it's important for motorists to be extra vigilant as children make their way to and from school.
On a two-lane road or multi-lane road with no barriers between lanes, motorists must stop if a school bus stops with red flashing lights and the stop arm extended.
On a multi-lane roadway with a grassy or concrete barrier between travel lanes, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the school bus must stop when the bus's red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
While many students travel to and from school on a bus, it's also important to remember there are children walking who must cross streets to get to school or return home.
It is also just as important to keep children safe while they're in a school building. As a member of the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development, I helped pass legislation to increase safety efforts at Hoosier schools.
House Enrolled Act 1016, which strengthens county school safety commissions across Indiana, allows for the appointment of a fire chief, or their designee, to a commission – allowing their expertise to contribute to local school safety policies.
Parents should rest assured that their children are safe in school, and as your state senator I will always work hard to protect Hoosier students.
As always, constituents can reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email at s48@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
