STATEHOUSE (April 11, 2023) — A bridge renaming resolution sponsored by State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) memorializing Chief Warrant Officer Donald L. Mills passed the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Transportation unanimously today.
House Concurrent Resolution 4 would urge the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the bridge over Wildcat Creek in Burlington the "Donald L. Mills Memorial Bridge."
Mills grew up near Burlington and the bridge is visible from his boyhood home.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served as a helicopter pilot from 1970 to 1971.
During the war, Mills disobeyed a direct order and flew behind enemy lines to help evacuate wounded Vietnamese soldiers.
"Donald risked his life to protect others," Alting said. "Renaming this bridge after him would memorialize his dedication to both Hoosiers and our country, and I am glad to sponsor the resolution in his honor."
Mills served on the Kokomo Police Department for 24 years and as a court security officer for Howard County Superior Court 1 for 13 years.
HCR 4 now moves to the full Senate for further consideration.
