Zay: Students from Mississinewa High School to Participate in We the People Competition

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 23, 2023) — A group of students from Mississinewa High School are participating in the We the People regional competition Nov. 17, at Ivy Tech Fort Wayne Campus, said State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington).

We the People is a civics program under the Indiana Bar Foundation that teaches elementary and secondary students about the United States Constitution and American democracy, and promotes civic engagement and responsibility.

"I wish this group of students the best of luck and commend them for representing Mississinewa High School at this well-respected competition," Zay said. "The importance of teaching civics and government to younger generations should not be overlooked. This generation includes future lawmakers, and it is great to see that students from Senate District 17 are engaging in government at a higher level than most their age."

In preparation for the regional competition, classes will look at six units and study two questions from each of those units. At the competition, students will act as witnesses and present their knowledge in a simulated congressional hearing. During the hearing, they will be asked one question per unit and then be expected to answer follow-up questions from a judging panel.
