COLUMN: Remembering Our Fallen Veterans

By State Sen. Jim Tomes (R-Wadesville)

The history of Memorial Day is fascinating and controversial as to how it started. What town, what state and what individual or group is responsible for initiating the reverent practice of placing flowers on the graves of Civil War soldiers both Confederate and Union killed in action?

Nevertheless, whoever was responsible, as a veteran, I'm grateful.

This glorious country has come a long way since 1861. America and its citizens have faced good times and hard times. Through it all, God has blessed America with strong men and women with the attributes and moral traits necessary to defend a Nation.

For those who sacrificed the ultimate, let's reflect for just a few moments in our activities on this Memorial Day to render a silent, "Thank you, young warrior."
