Summer Safety Tips

Friday, June 20, 2025

Summer is here in Indiana, and with that comes cookouts, lake and pool days, and Fourth of July celebrations.

As we enjoy the warm weather and fun this summer, it is important that Hoosiers do so while staying safe and healthy.

Below are tips to help Hoosiers stay safe during the warm summer months.

Water Safety

  • Designate a responsible adult to supervise children closely and constantly.
  • Always wear a life jacket while boating or swimming in deep water.
  • Avoid distractions while watching kids in or near water because drowning happens quickly and quietly.

Sun Safety

  • Always have water to stay hydrated, especially in extreme heat.
  • Wear sunscreen with at least 30 SPF, reapplying every two hours if you are swimming.
  • Take advantage of shade if possible and wear protective clothing like a hat or lightweight long-sleeved shirt.

In addition, with Independence Day on the horizon, many Hoosiers will be lighting up the sky with fireworks to celebrate.

Every year, thousands of people are injured by fireworks in the U.S., so it is important to be reminded of firework safety and Indiana's fireworks laws and regulations.

Below are tips Hoosiers should follow as we approach the Fourth of July festivities.

  • If you do not have a permit, buy only consumer-grade fireworks.
  • Check your local ordinances for fireworks hours restrictions.
  • Only use fireworks at locations where you have approval to set them off.
  • Always have a supply of water or a fire extinguisher available to put out fireworks.
  • Do not hold fireworks in your hands.
  • If you are watching a fireworks show, make sure you maintain a far enough distance away from where the fireworks are being set off to avoid being hit by fireworks fallout or the potential of fireworks going off in the wrong direction.
