Statement from State Sen. Jim Merritt

State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) made the following statement today following the hearing of
Senate Bill 33 in the Senate Committee on Health and Provider Services on Jan. 30:

STATE HOUSE (Jan. 31, 2019) — “Yesterday, I presented Senate Bill 33 in the Senate Committee on Health and Provider Services, which would establish a Comprehensive Addiction Recovery Center (CARC) Grant Program. The Division of Mental Health and Addiction would administer and set specific requirements for the grant program.

“Indiana’s need for a detox, treatment and recovery system of care is clear. We are currently experiencing an opioid scourge that is destroying Hoosier lives, therefore we have to plan and build a system of care for future epidemics as well. SB 33 would establish grants that CARCs could use to help those in need.

“I would like to thank those who testified during the hearing in support of SB 33, including Matt Brooks, Indiana Council of Community Mental Health Centers; Linda Grove-Paul, Centerstone; Wendy Noe, Dove Recovery House for Women; Stephanie Berry, Indiana University Health; Justin Phillips, Overdose Lifeline; Brandon George, Mental Health America of Indiana; and Timothy Kelly, Community Health Network.

“We still have a lot of work to get done, but this is an important first step in further helping those addicted recover.”
