STATEHOUSE (Aug. 25, 2026) — State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) recently honored World War II veteran Harry Uerkwitz as he celebrated his 100th birthday.
Uerkwitz was drafted to the United States Army in 1944, and after completing his training he was assigned to a supply company that landed in Normandy, France.
"Harry is an American hero and helped play an important role in delivering ammunition to the front line while in Normandy," Alting said. "Like so many members of his generation, when our nation came calling, he answered — and for that I am forever grateful."
After his time in Normandy, Uerkwitz was stationed in Berlin until he was honorably discharged in 1946.
Upon his return to the U.S., Uerkwitz began his 41-year-long career at the Lafayette Farm Co-Op.
"With so few World War II veterans still with us, I encourage everyone to recognize those who fought against tyranny in Europe and protect the freedoms we cherish to this day," Alting said.
