Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Studying Indiana's public lands

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

As many residents of southwest Indiana know, our region of the state is home to thousands of acres of public lands managed by the state and federal government for folks to enjoy.

That's why this year I was pleased to be assigned to the Interim Study Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources, which will study the economic value of public land for recreation in Indiana.

Interim study committees allow legislators to get a more in-depth look at important topics Hoosiers care about.

As home to properties like Lincoln State Park, Ferdinand State Forest, Pike State Forest, a portion of Patoka Lake and large sections of Hoosier National Forest, Senate District 48 welcomes countless visitors every year who want to visit our beautiful area of the state.

Our public lands offer opportunities to camp, fish, hike and learn about local history while also providing an economic benefit for our communities.

Often, those who visit our parks and forests make stops at small businesses in nearby communities to eat and shop.

Public lands also attract businesses to consider locating to our state and provide health benefits to visitors like physical activity opportunities while also spending some time away from our ever-connected world.

I am excited to meet with fellow lawmakers and stakeholders in the weeks and months ahead as we look into the economic value of our state's public land for recreation and the impact they have on our communities.

As always, constituents can reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email at s48@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
