Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Indiana's Federal Debt Resolution Gains Traction

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

Over the last several years, the Hoosier state has been celebrated as one of the most fiscally conservative states in the nation. This has allowed Indiana to maintain a stable financial outlook for the years ahead by maintaining adequate cash reserves, proper debt management and low debt service costs even when faced with uncertainty.

Unfortunately, our federal government's debt continues to increase at unsustainable rates.

Because of this continued rise in the federal debt, I authored Senate Resolution 51 this year, which recognized the urgency of our federal debt and its threat to national security.

As of Tuesday, Aug. 12, the national debt has ballooned to nearly $37 trillion. Of this debt, more than $8 trillion is owed to people outside the country, including more than $1 trillion owed to individuals in China.

Recently, the American Legislative Exchange Council recommended Senate Resolution 51 to serve as a model for other state legislatures from around the country to pass.

Our federal government must recognize the growing threat of debt to our country and how essential it is to secure our economic future so that burden does not fall on our children and grandchildren.

I'd like to thank ALEC for taking this issue seriously and working to spread awareness of our debt's national security threat to all 50 states.

As always, constituents can reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email at s48@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
