Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Fighting for Hoosier veterans

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

Hoosier veterans put their lives on the line to protect their family, friends and neighbors. That's why this year I was proud to support House Enrolled Act 1210, which provides a 100% deduction for homestead property taxes for our state's totally disabled veterans.

This legislation is designed to put more money back in the pockets of these brave men and women so they can better support their families.

This new law will return more than $46 million each year to totally disabled veterans, and this reform moves Indiana into the top tier of states for veteran-friendly property tax policy. About half of states provide some form of relief for totally disabled veterans, but fewer offer a full 100% exemption for homestead properties.

This exemption is also given to a surviving spouse of a totally disabled veteran as long as they don't remarry.

To receive this deduction, a totally disabled veteran or their surviving spouse must fill out a State Form 51186 between July 1 and Dec. 30 this year and submit the form to their local county auditor's office.

Any veteran or surviving spouse needing help filling out the form, or if they have any questions, can contact their local county veterans service office for assistance.

House Enrolled Act 1210 received widespread bipartisan support and was signed into law by Gov. Braun on March 12.
