Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Keeping Hoosiers safe from foreign adversaries

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

One of the most important priorities of government is to ensure our neighbors and homeland are safe from those who wish to harm us.

This year, I supported new laws aimed at limiting the influence of our nation's foreign adversaries, like Iran and China, and keeping Hoosiers safe.

Senate Enrolled Act 256 strengthens Indiana's ban on businesses from foreign adversary nations from owning any land in Indiana and builds on recent laws that required our state to divest from China.

This new law also establishes transparency and accountability requirements for agents working on behalf of our adversaries by mandating they register with the Indiana Attorney General's office.

Senate Enrolled Act 185 protects Hoosiers from consuming dangerous chemicals added to vaping products from our adversaries. China bans many of these chemicals in their own country, but allows them to be added to vaping products and sent to the U.S. That’s something that should not and will not be allowed to continue in Indiana.

I also supported House Enrolled Act 1406 this year, which prohibits the Indiana Economic Development Corporation from awarding tax credits to businesses controlled by a person from, headquartered in or organized in a foreign adversary nation.

As we've seen in recent years, our country's adversaries are working to harm Americans and destroy our economy, and these new laws work to ensure that won't happen.
