Senate Session Reaches Halftime

Senate Session Reaches Halftime

Thursday, February 5, 2026

The Indiana General Assembly recently reached the halfway point of the 2026 legislative session, which means bills must have passed out of their original chamber to continue moving through the legislative process.

This year, the Senate introduced 290 bills for consideration. Of those, nearly half passed with unanimous support and 90% passed with bipartisan support.

The House sent the Senate 112 bills for consideration in the second half. This week, the Senate began discussing and amending House bills in committees. Bills that pass out of committee then move to the floor to be considered by the full chamber. The same is true for the House, which is now considering Senate bills.

If a bill is amended in any way, it must be returned to the original chamber for review. Once the bill reaches a place that both chambers can agree upon, it then goes to the governor's desk for his consideration.

One bill, Senate Bill 212, has already passed both chambers and been signed into law by the governor.
