For most students, summer breaks are a time to go on vacations or enjoy a favorite hobby. For Fishers native Luke Bielawski, those two pastimes took on a whole new meaning.
The 24-year-old law student spent last summer golfing across the country, but it wasn’t just to practice his swing. It was to raise money for Providence Cristo Rey High School in Indianapolis – a small Catholic school that reaches out to underprivileged kids.
Inspired by the movie “Forrest Gump,” Luke wanted to make a positive impact on the lives of young people and began his 2,928-mile journey, which he called “From Tee to Shining Tee.” He teed off from the shores of the Pacific Ocean, striking golf balls as he crossed the country, and finished his expedition on the beach of the Atlantic Ocean.
At the end of it all, he scored 52,345 points, lost 5,540 golf balls and raised more than $60,000 in scholarships for Providence Cristo Rey High School.
The Indiana General Assembly honored Luke today for his outstanding accomplishments and dedication to Hoosier students today with a resolution. Luke’s family joined him at the Statehouse to accept the recognition from Senate President Pro Tem David Long.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to recognize Luke and his wonderful efforts to raise donations for this Indianapolis high school,” Long said. “It’s great to see that he has used his passion for golf for such a commendable cause.”
