Sen. Johnson, Rep. Prescott urge federal action to protect the unborn and uphold states' rights

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 31, 2025) – State Sen. Dr. Tyler Johnson (R-Leo) and State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City) joined several members of the General Assembly in signing a letter to President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance urging their administration to direct the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration to suspend distribution and approval of the abortion drug mifepristone and its generic versions.

The lawmakers expressed their support for a recent letter from U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and 50 Republican senators calling for stronger federal action to review the safety of mifepristone and enforce protections for unborn children and women.

Indiana has been a leader in defending the sanctity of life and that federal officials can help ensure state laws are respected. Despite Indiana's robust abortion ban, there remains an unrestricted flow of dangerous chemical abortion drugs across state lines.

"Working as an emergency room physician for many years, I've seen firsthand the harm these chemical abortion drugs can cause – not only to unborn children, but to the women who take them," Johnson said. "Indiana has led the way in enacting pro-life policy, and now it is time for those same values to be upheld at the federal level so that our most vulnerable are protected nationwide."

Johnson said he shares Prescott's concern that unsafe abortion drugs are being distributed to Indiana despite the state's pro-life laws and praised federal leaders for taking a closer look at their impact.

"It's encouraging to see national leaders taking steps to review the dangers of chemical abortions," Prescott said. "Indiana has been a leader in pro-life policy, and I'm hopeful this will lead to stronger national safeguards that value both women's health and their unborn children."

The letter commends HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Dr. Martin Makary for initiating a safety review of mifepristone, but it urges further action to suspend its approval and enforce safeguards that protect women from dangerous side effects.

Lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to supporting federal efforts to restore safety standards and upholding the constitutional authority of states to enact pro-life laws.
