Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Fairness for Hoosier Taxpayers

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

At a time when many Hoosiers are struggling to afford necessities, it's our responsibility as your representatives in the state legislature to keep taxes low and spend each tax dollar the state receives as efficiently and prudently as possible.

That’s why I supported Senate Enrolled Act 1, a new law that improves the integrity of Indiana’s Medicaid program. This law ensures Hoosiers receiving Medicaid benefits are financially eligible – and living in Indiana legally – by requiring stronger and more frequent eligibility checks.

I also believe it is only fair to ask healthy, able-bodied adults on Medicaid’s Healthy Indiana Plan to contribute to society through employment or community engagement – as millions of Hoosiers do – to receive benefits. SEA 1 implements those work requirements.

My priority as your state senator is to safeguard your hard-earned tax dollars against waste and abuse, and I will continue to put hardworking Hoosiers first.

As a reminder, local residents are invited to two of my upcoming town hall meetings, which will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the Spencer County Youth and Community Center and 5:30 to 7 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the Derby Community Center. More town halls are scheduled in September.

Constituents can reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email at s48@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
