Schmitt encourages residents to attend energy affordability listening sessions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEHOUSE (March 23, 2026) — State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper) encourages residents of Senate District 48 to attend one of 10 state-wide listening sessions hosted by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to share the impacts of energy prices.

The closest listening session to Senate District 48 will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. central time, on Tuesday, April 7, in Exhibit Hall B at the Old National Events Plaza, 715 Locust St., Evansville.

"Hoosiers are understandably frustrated by the recent increase in utility costs," Schmitt said. "That's why I encourage local residents to attend one of these sessions – so the state can hear directly from utility customers about energy affordability."

During the 2026 legislative session, Schmitt supported House Enrolled Act 1002, which overhauls Indiana's ratemaking process for electric utilities to promote affordability, predictable monthly bills and reliable service. The legislation switches Indiana to a performance-based ratemaking model, requiring utility companies to meet certain affordability and reliability goals in order to collect their full return on investment.

"This new model in House Enrolled Act 1002 is the biggest change to Indiana's ratemaking process in more than 100 years," Schmitt said. "From now on, the money utility companies can collect will be based on the quality of service they provide customers."

Schmitt encourages constituents to contact him with any questions or comments they may have.

He can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Schmitt or by phone at 800-382-9467.
