Schilling Way road renaming resolution passes Senate

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 25, 2024) – A resolution authored by State Sen. Dan Dernulc (R-Highland) honoring Frank Schilling passed the Senate unanimously today.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 8 would rename a section of US 41 between West 93rd Avenue and West 109th Avenue in Saint John, Indiana, "Schilling Way" in honor of Frank Schilling.

Settling in St. John Indiana in the 1930s, Frank Schilling and his family worked on their family homes and opened a Mobil gas station along a gravel US 41. Years later the Schilling brothers opened Schilling Lumber, beginning a legacy of developing various properties across St. John. This includes maintaining what was once known as the Marian shrine, and now has grown into a decades-long multimillion dollar family investment to create the Shrine of Christ's Passion, one of the most popular Catholic shrines in the Midwest.

“I have only met Frank one time, but his dedication to our local community, business and religion is something that is hard to match," Dernulc said. "Northwest Indiana is lucky to have such a hardworking community man and I am honored to carry this resolution through the Senate to honor him and all he has done."

"This resolution honors Frank Schilling's dedicated hard work for his community, business and his faith," said State Sen. Rick Niemeyer (R-Lowell). "His work ethic reflects that of the communities in Northwest Indiana. It is only fitting for us to rename part of US 41, which is where his journey began."

SCR 8 will now move to the Indiana House of Representatives for further consideration.
