Staying Safe this Halloween

Staying Safe this Halloween

Thursday, October 27, 2022

Halloween is right around the corner and with children traveling between houses to collect treats, the holiday can be exciting but tricky for parents wanting their families to have a safe and enjoyable experience.

To prevent accidents, the Indiana State Police is encouraging Hoosiers to celebrate safely by practicing the tips below.

Costume Tips

  • Keep costumes short to prevent trips and falls.
  • Try wearing make-up instead of a mask. Masks can obstruct a child's vision, which may make crossing a street and navigating stairs dangerous.
  • Make sure children wear light colors or reflective tape attached to their costumes.

Trick or Treating

  • Make sure children of all ages trick-or-treat in groups and those under the age of 12 are accompanied by an adult.
  • Map out a safe route for children to trick-or-treat so parents can predict their location.
  • Instruct children to visit familiar homes where the outside lights are on.
  • Encourage children to trick-or-treat while it is still light outside. If children are out after dark, make sure they have flashlights and travel on well-lit streets.
  • Remind children not to enter the homes or cars of strangers.
  • Follow your communities' trick-or-treat hours. The trick-or-treat times for major towns in Indiana can be found here.

Treats

  • Remind children not to eat any of their treats until they get home.
  • Check all treats in a well-lit area at home.
  • Only eat unopened candies and other treats that are in their original wrappers. Remember to inspect fruits for anything suspicious.

Celebrating Halloween is a great way for families to connect with their community and neighbors, but it is important for Hoosiers to remain cautious to reduce the risk of accidents. For more information about Halloween safety, click here
