Supporting veterans

By State Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond)

This week, on Friday, Nov. 11, Americans will recognize Veterans Day to honor and thank the brave men and women who have served our country.

Since our country's founding, generations of Americans have reaffirmed their dedication and loyalty to our country by serving in our military. The commitment to serve our country has deep roots in our Hoosier heritage, with more than 300,000 veterans living in our state, and more than 17 million veterans living in the United States today.

In the General Assembly, we make a consistent effort to show our state's appreciation for these men and women by passing laws that benefit them upon their return home. These include certain forms of tax relief, educational and employment opportunities and more.

Honorably discharged veterans can receive property tax deductions and active military members can see a deduction in their income tax. Indiana also offers in-state college tuition to newly discharged service members and free tuition for National Guard members and Purple Heart recipients.

Recently, we have also increased the number of veterans eligible to qualify for emergency aid from the Military Family Relief Fund. This fund is designed to assist Indiana veterans and their families who are experiencing financial hardship.

Our country and state have a lot to offer our veterans, and I encourage anyone with a military history to visit IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Veterans to learn more about the benefits and resources available.

It is important we remember the dedication shown by the veterans in our lives and offer our heartfelt thanks by supporting them and their families in return.

May we never take our freedom – and their sacrifice – for granted.
