Indiana education continues to shine

By State Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond)

A good education is foundational for Hoosiers' success, and it has always been important to Indiana. Education gets the highest share of our state's General Fund dollars at 47%, and we are also constantly looking for ways to address the ever-changing world of education. Our hard work is paying off.

The 2025 Kids Count Data Book shows that Indiana is steadily moving up in the ranks in all areas of education. Indiana moved up to 25th in child well-being this year, up from 27th last year. Our education ranking also improved to 11th from 17th last year. This follows a jump to sixth in the nation for our reading scores according to the National Assessment of Education Process.

This reflects the commitment of our hardworking teachers and the Indiana General Assembly to constantly improve our education system. In 2023, I sponsored a law to foster the adoption of the Science of Reading in classrooms. I have received feedback that both teachers and students have embraced the Science of Reading, and I'm confident it will continue to improve our kids' reading scores.

Last session, I also authored a law that prevents students from using cell phones in the classroom, ensuring that their attention is on their classes. This is another area where I'm receiving positive feedback.

The education laws we have passed have allowed Indiana to continue making big strides forward in educating our Hoosier kids. With more legislation enacted this year, I am confident Hoosier students will continue to succeed.
