This year, Indiana has made great strides in improving education for Hoosier children and teachers. From increasing teacher pay to changing the way we grade our schools, we have done a lot of work to make Indiana one of the best states for education.
In recognition of our hard work this session to make Indiana's educational environment the best it can be, I was honored to attend a bill signing this week in Gov. Braun's office where he ceremonially signed many of our education bills into law.
One bill Braun signed into law during the ceremony was Senate Enrolled Act 146, which I authored. This bill increases the minimum teacher salary from $40,000 to $45,000 to ensure our teachers are receiving the support they deserve as they teach the leaders of tomorrow.
Braun also signed House Enrolled Act 1498, a bill I sponsored to create a better school grading system that reflects the schools' successes several different areas of education, not just standardized test scores. This will help parents better understand which schools offer the best education for their kids. This new system is currently being developed and an official draft will be released soon.
Finally, House Enrolled Act 1002 was also ceremonially signed into law. This bill removed expired language and outdated laws to clean up and streamline our education code.
We have done a lot of work this session to improve education, and this is only the beginning. We will continue to strive to make Indiana education the best in the country.
