Preserving Indiana's Medicaid Program

Preserving Indiana's Medicaid Program

Friday, April 25, 2025

The 2025 legislative session has officially ended, and one of the most important issues Senate Republicans prioritized this year was reforming Indiana's Medicaid program.

In recent years, the state has already experienced significant increases in Medicaid costs that have impacted our ability to fund other important budget needs like K-12 education.

Spending on the program has grown by $5 billion over four years, which is unsustainable and puts the program in jeopardy for those who rely on it for their health care needs.

Senate Enrolled Act 2 is the first step toward getting Medicaid spending under control by creating a more fiscally responsible program and ensuring only those who qualify for Medicaid receive it.

Under the legislation, the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration would be required to gather information from state and federal agencies to verify if individuals are eligible for Medicaid. This eligibility verification is important after a 2024 federal audit found 7.6% of Indiana's Medicaid claims were at improper rates.

While this legislation will not fix the issue of growth in the program overnight, it's an important first step in improving the program's efficiency, and Senate Republicans will remain dedicated to this goal.
