Preparing for Organization Day

Monday, November 13, 2023

Lawmakers will return to the Statehouse on Nov. 21 for the ceremonial start of the Indiana General Assembly's 2024 session.

Organization Day gives members of both the Indiana Senate and House of Representatives a chance to meet before the legislative session officially reconvenes in early January and marks the annual first roll call of all state legislators.

With the General Assembly being a part-time citizen legislature, lawmakers only meet during a portion of the year. This allows senators and representatives to live and work in the communities they serve and regularly meet with constituents throughout the year.

This year's Organization Day will be the first for State Sens. Cyndi Carrasco (R-Indianapolis), Greg Goode (R-Terre Haute) and Randy Maxwell (R-Guilford), who were recently sworn in for their respective terms.

Carrasco currently serves as Vice President and General Counsel for the University of Indianapolis, Goode is the State Director for U.S. Sen. Todd Young, and Maxwell is the CEO of his family-owned company Maxwell Construction.

During odd-numbered years, legislative sessions last through late April as lawmakers are tasked with crafting a two-year budget for the state.

However, the 2024 legislative session will be shorter, concluding on or before March 14 under state law.
