National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month

Friday, September 5, 2025

September is National Preparedness Month, serving as a reminder to have a plan in place in case of an emergency and encouraging everyone to act, review emergency plans and be prepared.

During the month of September, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security urges Hoosiers to refresh or establish emergency preparedness plans. This includes learning basic first aid, creating a communication plan with family and friends, putting together a disaster kit and being aware of common hazards that take place in Indiana, like tornadoes, floods and snowstorms.

Indiana experiences a variety of weather-related emergencies, from floods and severe thunderstorms to tornadoes and winter storms. Below are four steps Hoosiers should take to prepare now, limit damage and save lives.

  1. Learn basic first aid and CPR: First aid and CPR training are some of the most important life-saving skills, because saving a life can depend on what action is taken within the first few minutes of an emergency.
  2. Make an emergency plan: Establish a clear communication plan with family and friends. This includes where to meet during an emergency, evacuation routes and a back-up emergency contact.
  3. Build and update a disaster kit: A sustainable disaster kit includes essentials like water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, first aid supplies and tools.
  4. Know what to do for local emergencies: Each emergency hazard requires different preparation. Tornadoes are common in Indiana – be aware of the designated safe spot and have a way to receive weather alerts.

National Preparedness Month is more than just planning. It's about being ready to act when disaster strikes and doing so quickly and thoughtfully. Having a plan in place is the first step to potentially save many lives because we never know when disaster may strike. To learn more about National Preparedness Month, click here.
