Messmer Report: Working to reduce taxes

Working to reduce taxes

By State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper)

As a state senator, I believe it is important for government leaders to find ways for Hoosiers to keep more of their own hard-earned dollars.

In recent years, my Republican colleagues and I in the Indiana General Assembly have worked diligently to reduce taxes.

During the 2022 legislative session, the legislature passed House Enrolled Act 1002 which started the process to gradually cut Indiana's income tax rate.

Then, in the current two-year budget, we sped up this process to reduce income taxes. Indiana's tax rate will go down each year through 2027, after which it will remain at 2.9%.

With an increasing number of people working from home, a lower income tax rate can entice employees to consider moving to Indiana, even if their office is located in another state.

Another bill the legislature passed this year is House Enrolled Act 1034, which eliminates the state income tax on military pay.

Our men and women in uniform keep Indiana and the nation safe from harm, and ensuring they keep as much of their hard-earned money as possible in their pockets gives their families more stability.

The General Assembly also passed Senate Enrolled Act 325 this year, which reduces property taxes by allowing certain outbuildings and lawn structures to be counted as part of a person’s homestead, qualifying them for the property-tax homestead deduction and a 1% tax cap.

Through House Enrolled Act 1499, the legislature also increased eligibility for homeowners 65 and older to qualify for property tax deductions, which reduces their property tax bill and saves them money.
