Local farms honored with Hoosier Homestead Award

STATEHOUSE (March 26, 2024) – Area legislators are recognizing the latest local recipients of the Hoosier Homestead Award, which recognizes farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.

Represented by State Sen. Stacey Donato (R-Logansport), State Rep. Jack Jordan (R-Bremen) and State Rep. Ethan Manning (R-Logansport), four locally owned farms were honored at the Statehouse.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program honors families who have made significant contributions to Indiana agriculture. Instituted in 1976, the program has recognized more than 6,000 family farms that have impacted Indiana's economic, cultural and social advancement.

"It is always a pleasure to recognize long-standing farms in our community as they reach such great milestones," Donato said. "Congratulations to these four dedicated family farms on this achievement and thank you for being pillars of agriculture in our state."

"Family-owned farms play an important role in Indiana's rich agriculture history and economy," Jordan said. "Our state is an ideal place for agribusiness and these farms are essential for sustaining that industry's growth."

"As a farmer, I know dedication and perseverance are critical to the success of any farming operation," Manning said. "These families continue to positively impact our community and economy, and I wish them success for the next 100 years."

To be named a Hoosier Homestead, farms must be owned by the same family for at least 100 consecutive years and consist of more than 20 acres or produce more than $1,000 of agricultural products per year. The award distinctions are centennial, sesquicentennial and bicentennial – for 100, 150 and 200 years, respectively.
