Leising co-chairs annual Rural Caucus meeting at State Fair

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 16, 2018) — State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) recently co-chaired the 2018 Rural Caucus meeting in the Normandy Barn at the Indiana State Fair.

The caucus, which convenes annually, is comprised of state senators and representatives who meet to listen to testimony on and discuss issues facing Indiana’s rural communities.

During this year’s meeting, lawmakers learned about a low-impact fish farming facility coming to Indiana, explored virtual reality options to teach farm equipment safety, and received updates on the opioid crisis in rural areas, among other things.

“The Rural Caucus is a great way for lawmakers, state agencies and those in agriculture-related fields to come together and learn about the challenges facing rural Indiana,” Leising said. “Issues brought forward during Rural Caucus can lead to further discussion, solutions and even legislation. I am pleased with the information our guest speakers provided this year, and I will work to continue to make our rural communities better places to live, work and raise a family.”

Over 20 legislators who represent Indiana’s rural districts attended the meeting. Also in attendance were representatives from agricultural associations and agricultural-related businesses.
