Koch: Passes Resolution Honoring Judge Najam

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 25, 2022) — State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) presented Senate Concurrent Resolution 17 at the Statehouse Tuesday, Jan. 24 to honor retiring Indiana Court of Appeals Judge Edward W. Najam, Jr.

Judge Najam earned his B.A. in Political Science at Indiana University in Bloomington and went on to earn his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1972. Before becoming a judge, Judge Najam served in many roles, including administrative assistant to the mayor of Bloomington and practicing attorney.

During his time on the Indiana Court of Appeals, Judge Najam was on the Supreme Court Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure for 10 years, and was also appointed chair of the Appellate Practice Section of the Indiana State Bar Association. He initiated the Appellate Rules Project, which led to the first comprehensive review of the Appellate rules in 30 years. Judge Najam has authored over 4,000 majority opinions for the Indiana Court of Appeals.

"In his three decades on the bench, Judge Najam has served with distinction," said Koch, a friend of Judge Najam for over 30 years. "I wish him all the best in his retirement and thank him for his dedication and public service to Indiana and our courts."

Sen. Koch, Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, serves Senate District 44, which includes all of parts of Bartholomew, Brown, Jackson, Lawrence and Monroe counties. He also serves on the Senate Committees on Commerce and Technology, Utilities (Chairman), Corrections and Criminal Law, Elections, and Family and Children Services.
