Keeping children safe on Halloween

Keeping children safe on Halloween

Monday, October 23, 2023

As nights get longer and temperatures get colder, little ghouls and goblins around Indiana will be venturing out for some treats.

Halloween is usually a safe and fun time for Hoosiers, but these festivities can make it easy to let your guard down.

The Indiana State Police (ISP) has several suggestions to keep Hoosier children safe during Halloween festivities.

ISP suggests keeping costumes short to help prevent any trips or falls; and to wear make-up instead of a mask. Masks can easily obstruct a child's vision which can create hazards, especially when crossing a street or walking up and down stairs.

Children should also wear light colors or reflective tape on costumes to make them more visible at night.

When trick-or-treating, ISP suggests older children stay with a group of friends and map out a safe route, so parents can predict where they are. Children should only stop at familiar homes where an outside light is on.

If a child is trick-or-treating after the sun sets, they should have a flashlight and travel on well-lit streets around town.

After trick-or-treating, children should not eat any candy until they get home.

Candy should be checked by an adult in a well-lit room and children should only eat unopened candies in their original wrappers.
