As the start of session gets closer, Senate Republicans are preparing for the upcoming budget year by taking part in interim study committees.
Study committees give legislators the opportunity to research and hear from experts on important issues without the time-constraints of a regular session. These committees not only help create legislation but are also especially important in helping craft a balanced budget that funds everything from education to roads and transportation.
The Interim Study Committee on Public Health, Behavioral Health, and Human Services is studying Indiana's sexual assault response workforce, the availability of their services to survivors and how law enforcement agencies respond to sexual assault cases.
The Interim Study Committee on Education will examine the use of Name, Image and Likeness for high school athletes.
The Interim Study Committee on Fiscal Policy, which will meet for the first time on Sept. 16, is studying alternative methods for property assessments. The committee is also studying the role of court appointed special advocates and exploring how they can be better funded, implemented and managed throughout Indiana.
The new Agricultural Promotion and Regulation Task Force, which will meet again on Sept. 2, is meeting this interim to study whether some of the roles Purdue University plays in agriculture should be transferred to a state-run entity.
