Reviewing important topics

As a part-time legislature, lawmakers in the Indiana General Assembly get an opportunity to conduct in-depth reviews on complicated topics by participating in summer study committees.

This year, the interim study committees will review topics ranging from mental health among veterans, crime trends, traffic fatalities, artificial intelligence and more.

The newly created State and Local Tax Review Task Force will also meet this summer to take a comprehensive look at the state's tax system and see where improvements can be made for Hoosiers.

This 12-member task force was created through Senate Enrolled Act 3, a Senate Republican priority bill, to analyze Indiana's tax system as a whole, as well as the state's near-term and long-term financial outlook.

While the state has consistently ranked among the best tax climates in the country, this new task force will look for ways to reduce or eliminate certain taxes so Hoosiers can keep more of their hard-earned money.

The task force will meet over the next two years and submit recommendations to the General Assembly before the 2025 budget session.

Lawmakers will also continue their work from the 2023 legislative session by studying the state's high health care costs, reviewing Medicaid costs, services and possible changes in existing services, and continuing to plan for Indiana's major road and bridge needs.

Topics were approved by the General Assembly's Legislative Council, which is comprised of eight members of the Indiana Senate and eight members of the Indiana House of Representatives.

The resolution outlining the assigned topics can be found here.
