Hoosier Students Continue Achieving Academic Growth in Reading and Math

Wednesday, November 12, 2025

Indiana students are continuing to achieve academic milestones in reading and math instruction according to a new report from the Indiana Department of Education.

Through initiatives like the Summer Learning Labs, Hoosier students received extra instruction in reading and math. IDOE's recent findings show major improvement among participating students and show that this targeted support outside of the traditional classroom environment is helping more students close gaps in learning and build skills that will last a lifetime.

These recent educational successes come on the heels of recent legislation supported by the Indiana Senate Republican Caucus, which include:

• A new law that updated Indiana's math curriculum standards and expanded teacher training to help students build stronger problem-solving skills;

A law that required schools to align curriculum to the Science of Reading and required teacher preparation programs to train new teachers in the Science of Reading;

• A $170 million investment that is still ongoing and includes assisting teacher preparation programs in updating their curriculum, paying for veteran teachers to be trained in the Science of Reading and rewarding schools that are successfully implementing the Science of Reading; and

• Continuing to invest in extended learning opportunities like Summer Learning Labs to give Hoosier students more opportunities to reach their learning goals.

Together, these investments are helping even more students across the state attain academic achievement.

The success of this targeted support is encouraging news and comes on the heels of Indiana students achieving record improvements in reading and math.

Much of the success we are seeing in the classroom is thanks to our outstanding teachers who dedicate their time to improving students' success. From early literacy and math instruction to extra time spent outside of the classroom teaching, Hoosier educators are applying evidence-based teaching methods that ensure students across the state are staying on track or getting caught up.

This success is why Senate Republicans are committed to finding even more ways we can support our students’ success and give our teachers access to meaningful resources that ensure young Hoosiers are prepared for what their futures may hold.
