Halloween Safety

Halloween is a great time for children to have fun while dressing up and trick-or-treating with friends, but it can be challenging for parents to ensure children are safe during the festivities.

That's why Indiana State Police (ISP) offers several tips to help parents and guardians keep children safe during Halloween festivities.

ISP suggests keeping costumes short to prevent trips and falls, and to wear make-up instead of a mask. Masks can easily obstruct a child's vision, which can create hazards, especially when crossing a street or walking up and down stairs.

Children should also wear light colors or reflective tape on costumes to make them more visible at night.

When trick-or-treating, ISP suggests older children stay with a group of friends and map out a safe route, so parents can predict where they are. Children should only stop at familiar homes where an outside light is on and visible.

If a child is trick-or-treating after the sun sets, they should have a flashlight and travel on well-lit streets.

After trick-or-treating, children should not eat any candy until they get home.

Candy should be checked by an adult in a well-lit room and children should only eat unopened candies in their original wrappers.

It is also important to check local news sources for trick-or-treating hours in each county and be respectful of residents during the evening.
