Grant funding available for solar eclipse events

Portions of Indiana will experience a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.

During this year's legislative session, the Senate adopted Senate Resolution 6 to bring awareness to the eclipse.

With so many visitors expected to travel to the state, Indiana communities are looking for ways to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Local organizations are eligible for a $2,000 grant from the IU Center for Rural Engagement, which can help cover the cost of eclipse-related activities and events.

Eligible events include arts and culture projects, like performing and visual arts, film and cultural heritage events.

The priority deadline to submit an application is Friday, Sept. 1. The center will conduct virtual office hours from 2 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays in August to answer any questions.

Some of the best viewing locations for the eclipse will be at Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) properties like state parks, forests and nature preserves.

DNR has created a page on its website with information about the upcoming eclipse and downloadable maps of properties with the best viewing locations.
