Ford: National gaming organization looks to develop responsible gambling standards across country

STATEHOUSE (July 18, 2023) — The National Council of Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS), led by State Sen. Jon Ford (R-Terre Haute), recently approved a resolution that aims to help states establish strong responsible gaming standards across the country.

Ford, who currently serves as president of the NCLGS and chairs the Responsible Gaming Commission, said the organization's members unanimously passed the resolution.

"This resolution provides direction and encourages states to work together to create common-sense legislation that will help Americans dealing with gambling problems get the help they need," Ford said.

Suggestions from the NCLGS resolution include:

  • An accredited national gambling helpline;
  • Advertising guidelines so marketing is targeted only to those who can legally to gamble;
  • A way to allow customers to discontinue gaming temporarily or permanently through an exclusion program; and
  • Exclusion lists that would stop people with gambling problems from playing in other states.

"I believe this resolution is a first step in making sure residents of gaming states are playing responsibly and these states are working together to ensure sensible gambling," Ford said.

The NCLGS is a group of state lawmakers that meets to discuss issues regarding gaming in states across the country. Its primary concern is the proper regulation of the gaming industry.
