Ensuring long-term energy reliability

Reliable, affordable energy is fundamental to Indiana's economy and an issue affecting all Hoosier employers and households.

In 2019, the General Assembly created the 21st Century Energy Policy Development Task Force to explore and identify energy sustainability policy recommendations.

The task force reported grid operators are concerned the U.S. could face more rolling blackouts as utilities rely more on the grid, especially during peak energy demand in the summer and winter seasons.

In response, the Senate passed House Bill 1007, which is a blueprint for Indiana's energy industry to follow to provide energy to Hoosiers for years to come.

The bill increases the share of required energy capacity a utility company must generate itself to 85%. This will help Indiana's utility companies stop relying on out-of-state providers to produce power Hoosiers need to keep their lights on.

Additionally, HB 1007 requires the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to consider reliability, affordability, resiliency, stability and environmental sustainability in its decisions.

As technology advances, Senate Republicans understand our state must ensure it can withstand the high energy demand. Having a plan for our energy infrastructure will help Indiana become more self-reliant and resilient, even under extreme circumstances.
