Local farms honored with Hoosier Homestead Award

STATEHOUSE (March 25, 2024) – Area legislators are recognizing the latest local recipients of the Hoosier Homestead Award, which recognizes farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.

Represented by State Sen. Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette), State Rep. Alan Morrison (R-Brazil) and State Rep. Sharon Negele (R-Attica), four locally owned farms were honored at the Statehouse.

  • The Charles Dill farm in Tippecanoe County received a Centennial Award
  • The Charles & Theresa Shelby farm in Tippecanoe County received a Centennial and Sesquicentennial Award
  • The Coleman farm in Parke County received a Bicentennial Award
  • The Stan Thayer farm in Tippecanoe County received a Centennial and Sesquicentennial Award

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program honors families who have made significant contributions to Indiana agriculture. Instituted in 1976, the program has recognized more than 6,000 family farms that have impacted Indiana's economic, cultural and social advancement.

"Agriculture is one of Indiana's top industries, contributing an estimated $35.1 billion to the state's economy," Deery said. "This is due in large part to family farms like these that have operated for generations across the Hoosier state. Congratulations to these farms who have earned this meaningful achievement."

"Families like these truly embody the enduring spirit of what it means to be a Hoosier," Morrison said. "They set an example for the rest of us on what it takes to face a variety of persistent challenges and obstacles, and still thrive in spite of it all."

"Farming can be a tough and challenging way of life that requires hard work and dedication to be successful," Negele said. "That is why we honor families like these who have contributed to one of Indiana's largest industries for years."

To be named a Hoosier Homestead, farms must be owned by the same family for at least 100 consecutive years and consist of more than 20 acres or produce more than $1,000 of agricultural products per year. The award distinctions are centennial, sesquicentennial and bicentennial – for 100, 150 and 200 years, respectively.
