Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Protecting Hoosier children from addictive social media

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

The world Hoosier children are growing up in today is much different than it was even a decade ago.

With electronic devices and social media now part of our daily lives, I believe it's important for big tech companies to ensure children are safe from addictive features on their websites and apps.

That’s why I supported House Enrolled Act 1408 this year, which helps protect Hoosier children from these addictive features, which includes elements such as "Like" counts.

Under this new law, large social media sites will be required to block Hoosiers younger than 16 from opening accounts unless that child has parental permission.

If a parent allows a child to set up an account, the social media site must restrict the account to prevent addictive features on the child's account, and the account cannot be searchable to anyone who isn't already social media friends with the child. The sites must also give parents an option to monitor their child's account with a separate password.

I supported House Enrolled Act 1408 because the technology we use is constantly changing, and we have sadly seen children here in Indiana harmed through social media.

Parents must have more tools to protect their children, and I believe this new law, which requires a parent’s approval for social media use and holds big tech accountable, is a step in the right direction.

As always, constituents can reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email at s48@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
