Deery files bill to establish water transfer guidelines

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 8, 2024) — State Sen. Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette) today filed a bill that would establish guardrails to protect Indiana communities from the potential harms of large water transfers.

"Over the last year, I have heard from more constituents about this issue than any other," Deery said. "This bill responds to those concerns by taking important first steps to protect the water resources of all Hoosier communities."

The bill would require permits from the Indiana Natural Resources Commission to withdraw more than 10 million gallons a day from an aquifer for any facility located more than 20 miles away. The bill also extends more protections to farmers located close to a large well.

"This bill is a good starting point to better protect local resources in the future," Deery said. "While it may not accomplish everything we want – it will offer basic safeguards that will put Senate District 23 communities in a much better position to protect our water."

Bills must first be considered by assigned committees before moving to the full Senate. Committee hearings can be viewed online at iga.in.gov. Legislative calendars, agendas, vote tallies and proposed legislation can also be found on this site.

Deery encourages constituents to contact him with any questions or concerns on this and other topics at Senator.Deery@iga.in.gov or 317-232-9400.
