Thanking our hard-working Americans

By State Sen. Jim Tomes (R-Wadesville)

Monday, Sept. 4, marks the 129th year of our great nation celebrating Labor Day. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September a national holiday in recognition of the many contributions hard-working Americans have made to our country's strength and success.

Prior to that occasion, there was a tremendous national movement to change working conditions, establish fair wages and create child labor laws. The struggle was intense, and lives were lost, but we should never take for granted how their sacrifice brought attention to the value of the working men and women in our country.

That time in history is another example of people blazing a trail of progress to make life better and America great.

Our country has been built on and continues to prosper because of the hard work, responsibility and sacrifice of Americans. On this day, may we celebrate and thank the many men and women of our country for their hard work and dedication to their trade.

God Bless America,

Senator Jim Tomes
