FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Local farms honored with Hoosier Homestead Award

STATEHOUSE (March 28, 2023) – Area legislators are recognizing the latest local recipients of the Hoosier Homestead Award, which recognizes farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.

Represented by State Sen. Eric Bassler (R-Washington), State Rep. Shane Lindauer (R-Jasper) and State Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville), two locally owned farms were honored at the Statehouse.

The Brown farm in Martin County received a Centennial Award and the Hays farm in Greene County received a Centennial and Sesquicentennial Award.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program honors families who have made significant contributions to Indiana agriculture. Instituted in 1976, the program recognizes the impact these family farms have made on the economic, cultural and social advancements of Indiana. In the past 47 years, more than 5,800 farms have received the honor.

"Congratulations to our family-owned farms in Senate District 39," Bassler said. "Farms like the Brown and Hays farms are the backbone of our state and communities. I wish these families all the success for years to come."

"Maintaining a business for 100 years is an incredible accomplishment," Lindauer said. "Our community is lucky to have so many families keeping the farming tradition alive and thriving."

"Family farms are not only important to our Hoosier heritage, but they're critical to our state's future," Borders said. "Indiana has been blessed to have so many families pass on their farming traditions and passion for making a living off the land. I wish these Hoosier Homestead recipients all of the best moving forward. It's an honor to recognize their family legacies."

To be named a Hoosier Homestead, farms must be owned by the same family for at least 100 consecutive years and consist of more than 20 acres or produce more than $1,000 of agricultural products per year. The award distinctions are Centennial, Sesquicentennial and Bicentennial – for 100, 150 and 200 years, respectively.
